International Student Service
- Housing
- We offer three types of housing:
- Which one should I choose?
Please study the different choices and then make a decision that is right for you.
- Who can help me with reservations?
Our Housing Coordinator will assist you in reserving a space. He can also give you information about local hotels and youth hostels in case you must arrive before your housing move-in date, or if you need a place to stay for a few days after your study program is finished.
- When should I reserve housing?
We strongly recommends that you arrange accommodations before you arrive. This will help you to have an enjoyable and relaxing experience while studying at the Learnet Academy, Inc. Remember, applying early helps to improve the chance that you will get the type of housing you want. The Learnet Academy recommends that you apply at least 30 days before the start of your program.
- How should I pay?
All of our providers prefer credit card payment for fastest service. Checks drawn on an American bank are the second preferred method. Homestay providers also offer wire payment service. Please note, no international postal money orders will be accepted.
- Specific Housing Information
- Homestays
Homestays offer the student a unique experience living and interacting with a family in the Los Angeles area. You will have your own bedroom with 2 meals a day (usually breakfast and dinner). All host family homes are just a short bus ride of 20 to 30 minutes to Learnet Academy class.
- Furnished Apartments
Furnished apartments offer double occupancy rooms and some single occupancy rooms. Furnished apartments include basic furniture for living room, bedroom, kitchen, and dining room. Rent prices also include utilities. All buildings are secure, and many have swimming pools and/or Jacuzzis. Optional packages may include local telephone service, cable TV. and other items. Most apartment buildings have a high number of professionals living in them. So, apartments are ideal for mature and responsible students who will have respect for their roommates and neighbors. Learnet Academy and the surrounding communities have an excellent system of bus lines which consists the Metropolitan Transit Authority-MTA. These lines provide the rider with convenient access to destinations throughout the city of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County. All bus systems have stops near Learnet Academy. If you need help taking the bus, our staff can give you maps, schedules, or advice. We will also give you information about monthly student passes. You can also get exact bus directions to a specific address at the "METRO TRIP PLANNER" section of the MTA Web site.
- Rooming House
In a Rooming House, students will have their own room while sharing common areas with other international students. Rooming House recommendations can be provided by Learnet Academy.
- Airport Pick-up
- Airport pick-up and delivery services are provided from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) by Super Shuttle. There is a separate charge for this service. An Airport Transportation Reservation Form is included in the "Welcome" packet that we send to the student. Simply fill out the form with the date, time, and airline information for the day of arrival along with the address of the destination. Include credit card information for payment and a fax number or e-mail for notification of confirmation. Note: Students should not list Learnet Academy as their destination. Your destination should be the place where you will reside during your stay in Los Angeles or the hotel/hostel you have booked.
- Personal Transportation
- Students use a variety of ways to get around town from bicycles to roller-blades to scooters, and by car. The car, perhaps, is the most desirable form of transportation, but for an international student it may not be the most practical for short-term stays. Students intending to stay for periods of six months or longer may want to carefully consider the purchase of a car. Read more about buying a car before you make the decision.
- Medical Insurance
- Medical insurance must be purchased for all intensive programs. This insurance will allow you to visit the hospital or clinic of your choice for sickness or injuries that occur while studying at Learnet Academy. Contact Student Services for more detailed information on your health insurance coverage.
- Banking
- If you are staying in Los Angeles longer than four weeks, it's a good idea to open a checking account. Americans use checks and credit cards for most types of shopping. It's not customary to keep and carry a lot of cash. Several banks near Learnet Academy offer student discounts, such as 'no monthly service charges' for checking accounts. Sending and receiving money from abroad is easy: there are two Western Union offices located less than 3 kilometers from school.
- Computers
- Although over 65% of students have computers at home, we also provide computer access in multimedia computer labs. Besides free Internet and e-mail access, these labs are also equipped with a variety of language learning software such as TOEFL preparation and pronunciation.
- Academic Counseling and Tutoring
- Our Academic Advisors assist with U.S. college and university entrance and application procedures. Guidance and arrangements for studying in Learnet Academy's professional certificated programs also are provided. In addition to a group orientation session each quarter, they also provide individual assistance to students who need specific guidance and tutoring in choosing their next course of study.
- F-1 Student Advising
- The Student Services also provides free assistance regarding visa and immigration issues. Their services include preparation of I-20 forms for student visas, advice on visa status changes, transferring between schools, and temporary travel outside of the U.S. For assistance regarding special visa and immigration issues, contact your counselor or advisor.
